In the beginning there was the idea of optimizing the workflow of surgeons. Scopis GmbH, which was founded in 2010, develops navigation systems for minimally invasive operations.
Everything started in the operating theater. Bartosz Kosmecki, then a research assistant at the Charité University Clinic in Berlin, noticed that there were no endoscopes for precisely surveying the area being operated on. Kosmecki was sure that such an aid would make the surgeon's work very much easier.
Founded on the basis of practical requirements
In July 2010 together with Andreas Reutter and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft as well as Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin he founded Scopis GmbH. The company's goals are the development and marketing of measurement systems for minimally invasive surgery. Because of the shortened duration of operations in various clinical fields of operation savings of time and costs can be achieved, clinical complications can be reduced, operations can be completely documented and better post-operative results can be brought about.
The basis of the Scopis technology was developed in the Berliner Zentrum für Mechatronische Medizintechnik (BZMM), which is operated jointly by the Charité Hospital and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology under the leadership of Prof. Erwin Keeve.
First steps on the ladder to success
The first step on the ladder to success was the award as Business Idea of the Year 2009 at the Entrepreneurship Summit of the Charité Foundation. After a successful research transfer, which was sponsored through the EXIST Program (of the Federal Ministry of Science – BMWi), the investor High-Tech Gründerfonds invested in the young company in October 2010. Already after 6 months Scopis was able to bring the first navigation system approved as a medical product onto the market and start building up a worldwide distribution network. At the same time Scopis became an important supplier of technology and collaboration partner for larger medical technology companies.
In November 2013 Scopis announced a further successful round of financing. The IBB Beteiligungsgesellschaft, Berlin, and Extorel GmbH, Munich, are investing a sum totaling seven figures in strengthening the company's global expansion.
Scopis® Hybrid Navigation unifies measurement technologies
A new innovative product from Scopis GmbH is the Scopis® Hybrid Navigation system, which unifies optical and electromagnetic measurement technology in one system as the first interdisciplinary navigation platform.
Scopis products are being continually used clinically and further developed. Currently they are being distributed in more than 20 countries. The company's headquarters are in the Mitte district of Berlin.
